For the second time this year the West Vancouver Varsity football team found themselves down by two touchdowns early. “Never say die” was the battle cry and for the second time this year the Varsity Highlanders fought to earn a big win!
The Rutland Voodoo opened the game with a big defensive stop and they moved the ball on the ground with ease to go up 12-0 in the first quarter. The first quarter may have been Rutland’s, but the rest of the game was owned by the Highlanders. The Varsity Highlanders shut it down on defence and got into a solid rhythm on offence. A big kick return by #3 Aidan Izadi took us down to Rutland’s two yard line and kickstarted our comeback efforts. On offence the Highlanders were once again led by #12 QB Ben Corbett. Corbett threw two touchdowns to #88 Ethan Johnston and added two more rushing touchdowns of his own. On defence #54 Ryerson Wallace led the charge. Wallace seemed to be involved in almost every tackle. First year player linebacker #10 Keelan Hondro stepped a starting role and had an impact on almost every play. His heart and fearless pursuit of defence was impressive. The Highlander defensive line bought into the game plan and took care of business by filling their gaps allowing our linebackers to flow with speed all over the field. Unfortunately we entered the game with a line ravaged by injuries and this game didn’t help. The team will definitely need the next two bye weeks to get healthy. The West Vancouver Highlander Varsity Football team showed an exceptional amount of grit, heart and mental toughness to come together and fight for a huge road game.
