Hard work and perseverance pays off as the Junior Varsity Highlanders get the win!
The West Vancouver Highlander Junior Varsity football team were victorious Thursday over the Nanaimo Island District Junior Varsity Islanders 10 – 0. New Head coach Declan McGovern feels the players boys should all be proud of how they performed yesterday in our first win of the season. The Junior Varsity Highlanders beat a similarly matched Nanaimo District team because the JV Highlanders were able to minimize mental mistakes, did their jobs, and capitalized on opportunities. Defensively Thursday’s game was an impressive showing for the JV Highlander defense. The JV Highlanders grit and determination showed when they managed pushed Nanaimo District back for unprecedented two safeties and stopped them on 4th and Goal from the 1-yard line. The defensive line was disciplined and didn’t get tricked by the Nanaimo District Islanders deceptive offence. The defensive line stayed in their gaps and plugged up running plays in the backfield time and again. The defensive backs did a great job in pass coverage, including an interception by Woo Sung Choi that just about sealed the victory for the JV Highlanders. Coach McGovern was really impressed by players who came in off the bench, made key plays for us, and showed through their play why they should see more of the field. Offensively the JV Highlanders moved the ball quite well on offence. Quarterback Tomo Hursthouse had a great game throwing the ball, Lucas Haldane had success rushing by finding the gaps the offensive line made for him, and our receivers did well hanging on to the football and turning short passes into big gains. As always even after a win there are things the JV Highlanders can improve on next week. The hard work starts with everyone watching the game film from this game analyzing what they did right and what went wrong or what they could have done better. Game film is not about highlights but about learning. Next week the JV Highlanders take on the Sullivan Height Stars. Pride ~ Respect ~ United
