It was a tough loss today for the West Vancouver Junior Varsity Highlanders, but a valiant effort nonetheless.
The South Delta Sun Devils came to our home field as the number 1 team in our division and perhaps the Lower Mainland. The Junior Varsity Highlanders came out in the first quarter and ran the ball hard and with some success to start the game. The Junior Highlander’s game plan today was to attempt to exploit what could be considered the rare vulnerability of the South Delta Sun Devil’s defense… their run stop on defence. Moving the chains early with our run game gave the JV Highlanders some confidence, unfortunately we were unable to translate our early success into points on offence. As the game wore on, the Highlanders began to feel the effects of the rain, the score and started to fade and miss key tackles. We are hard pressed to win if we can’t tackle. Tired players and missed tackles allowed for some long runs and scoring plays against us by South Delta. As the first half ended the Highlanders down by 23 and the Coach Currie was forced to change his game plan from the run heavy game plan to more of a passing game. It is hard to get the passing to “click” when the weather and fatigue are working against you. Full credit to the team for switching gears and fighting through adversity. The West Vancouver Junior Varsity Highlanders are now looking ahead to the Carson Graham Eagles. Coach Currie is looking to build off our mistakes as well as the positives from today. We can only learn from experience and Coach Currie has done a great job this year with the team. To quote Colin Powell “There are no secrets to Success. It is the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failure”. Pride ~ Respect ~ United
