The Junior Varsity Highlanders look to close out the regular season against our North Shore rival, Handsworth Royals (3-1).
Last weeks game against the Carson Graham Eagles was a high scoring affair and the Handsworth Royals will be bringing their high powered offence and stout defence to our field this Thursday. Kick-off is at 3:00 PM. Tackling and execution will be the keys for the JV Highlanders. Every game so far has been a close affair, but sloppy tackling has hurt us on the scoreboard. Please make sure you come and cheers the team on. Pride ~ Respect ~ United Coach Currie asked the boys to come out firing from that start in this game and they did they do just that.
An opening kick return touchdown by Jay Armitage capped off by a 2-point covert from QB Nolan Zen to Joaquin Sousa gave the Highlanders a 8-0 lead out of the gates. Carson Graham answered back with a touchdown on their next drive, but failed to convert the 2 point try maintaining the Highlander lead. Even with the Carson Graham Eagles score our JV Highlanders bubbled with confidence, turned to a strong run game, dominated the time of possession and methodically march down the field. Our offensive line came to play with a chip on their shoulders and ended this long drive by parting the seas and giving Ben Mason a beautiful hole right up the middle to power his way into the end zone for our second score of the day. Unable to convert the 2 point. The score sat at 14-6 heading into the second quarter. Carson Graham turned to a strong run game of their own and unleashed their main weapon in their running back # 25 Darius Ndrade. Full credit to the Carson Eagles running back who found lanes and broke arm tackles all game long for over 200 yards on the ground. The JV Highlanders struggled defensively all game long. Our tackling was sub par. You cannot control the game by trying to grab jerseys and arm tackle instead of wrapping up properly. The JV Highlanders tended to watch as a teammates tried to make a tackle instead of join in, gang tackling and making sure they all played whistle to whistle. Gang tackling and being smart and aggressive to the ball are always on of the keys to winning. The first half was balanced with neither team excelling on defence but both proving to be offensive forces. The JV Highlanders got the ball back late in the 2nd quarter, managed to get the score tied at 14 to 14 and drove down to the 6-inch line with about 10 seconds to go in the 1st half. A quarterback sneak by Nolan Zen for what we all thought was a TD was called back with a flag for pushing the player and assisting him over the line. The jury is out on the call, but you must respect the officials. The coaches will certainly be pouring over the film to watch that play. Coming out of halftime the JV Highlanders knew they were going to be in for a battle. The coaches preached tackling and dominating on the offensive and defensive line. The second half we continued to have issues wrapping up and tackling. This led to big plays by Carson Graham who continued to pound out a successful ground game. On a positive note, the JV Highlander offence continued to click for the most part as Nolan Zen threw a touchdown pass to Jay Armitage and later in the game, Joaquin Sousa was able to collect a fumble recovery in the end zone for our 4th TD of the game followed by a successful 2 point convert to give us 28 points on the day. The offence never gave up and continued to fight for every inch on the field. The theme of the second half was the same as the first half… tackling. The JV Highlanders struggles finishing off on defence and unfortunately allowed the Carson Eagles to continue to score every time they got the ball and late in the game at time we could only match them with punts. Officiating should never determine a game but at time the coaches felt that the calls weren’t going the Highlander way. The JV Highlanders battled hard despite of this and the team kept their composure. Coach Curries thinks this game, despite the seemingly lopsided score was a very well played game by the JV Highlanders. It was a very tight battle for 3 quarters of the game until Carson started pulling away. Coach Curries (as always) is very proud of the way our offensive Line played. The offensive line dominating Carson Graham's defensive line. This allowed some great runs by Ben Mason and Joey Craddock and allowed them to find their lanes and make big impacts in the run game. Nolan Zen was on his game as well, spreading the ball to at least 5 different receivers throughout the game and moving the sticks to keep our offense on the field. This game was one of those games where the score doesn’t match the exciting take-aways for the players and the coaches. Offensively we need to take this strong performance and apply it to Handsworth next week. Defensively we just need to get back to fundamental tackling and being aggressive to the ball. Coach Currie knows we have lost that in recent weeks. We have had many players not coming or not participating in Monday practices where the bulk of our live hitting drills take place. We all know that when this Highlanders team takes that next step and starts putting together a complete game for 4 quarters, we will no doubt be powerful team on the North Shore. Pride ~ Respect ~ United The West Vancouver Junior Varsity Highlanders take on the Carson Graham Eagle this Thursday, October 26th at Carson Graham Secondary School. Game kick-off is at 3:00 PM
The 1-2 Carson Graham Eagles host our JV Highlanders and will be bringing their running attack offence and strong defence. Games against Carson Graham are always intense and lively affairs. The Junior Varsity team had a tough game against the South Delta Sun Devils last week. This week the team hopes to learn from last week and bounce back. It was FANTASTIC to see so many parents out cheering the team on. Make sure you come out and cheer on the team! GO HIGHLANDERS!! "Resilience. Don't leave home without it... You were born with bounce-back ability!" ~ Ty Howard Pride ~ Respect ~ United It was a tough loss today for the West Vancouver Junior Varsity Highlanders, but a valiant effort nonetheless.
The South Delta Sun Devils came to our home field as the number 1 team in our division and perhaps the Lower Mainland. The Junior Varsity Highlanders came out in the first quarter and ran the ball hard and with some success to start the game. The Junior Highlander’s game plan today was to attempt to exploit what could be considered the rare vulnerability of the South Delta Sun Devil’s defense… their run stop on defence. Moving the chains early with our run game gave the JV Highlanders some confidence, unfortunately we were unable to translate our early success into points on offence. As the game wore on, the Highlanders began to feel the effects of the rain, the score and started to fade and miss key tackles. We are hard pressed to win if we can’t tackle. Tired players and missed tackles allowed for some long runs and scoring plays against us by South Delta. As the first half ended the Highlanders down by 23 and the Coach Currie was forced to change his game plan from the run heavy game plan to more of a passing game. It is hard to get the passing to “click” when the weather and fatigue are working against you. Full credit to the team for switching gears and fighting through adversity. The West Vancouver Junior Varsity Highlanders are now looking ahead to the Carson Graham Eagles. Coach Currie is looking to build off our mistakes as well as the positives from today. We can only learn from experience and Coach Currie has done a great job this year with the team. To quote Colin Powell “There are no secrets to Success. It is the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failure”. Pride ~ Respect ~ United West Van Highlanders Ryerson Wallace and Ben Corbett give Top 10 and Honourable Mention performances against Rutland last week.
Linebacker Ryerson Wallace earned a Top 10 performance in BC by tallying an amazing 20 tackles, four for negative yardage, while adding a sack and a fumble recovery. Ryerson seemed to be involved in every defensive play. His play with fellow middle linebacker Keelan Hondro was impressive. Ben Corbett was a force on both sides of the ball to earn an Honerable Mention. On the offensive side of the ball the West Vancouver quarterback threw two TD passes, ran for two others. On defence Ben recorded five tackles including two for a loss of yards, and batted down an amazing three passes. These two players are flanked by other great performances and the team as a whole played tough. Pride ~ Respect ~ United The West Vancouver Junior Varsity Highlanders take on the South Delta Sun Devils this Thursday, October 19th at West Vancouver Secondary School. Game kick-off is at 3:45 PM
The Sun Devils bring their high powered offence and their 3-1 record to West Vancouver. South Delta has scored 167 points in 4 games so the Highlander defence will have their hands full. Make sure you come out and cheer on the team! GO HIGHLANDERS!! "It's not how big you are but how big you play" Pride ~ Respect ~ United For the second time this year the West Vancouver Varsity football team found themselves down by two touchdowns early. “Never say die” was the battle cry and for the second time this year the Varsity Highlanders fought to earn a big win!
The Rutland Voodoo opened the game with a big defensive stop and they moved the ball on the ground with ease to go up 12-0 in the first quarter. The first quarter may have been Rutland’s, but the rest of the game was owned by the Highlanders. The Varsity Highlanders shut it down on defence and got into a solid rhythm on offence. A big kick return by #3 Aidan Izadi took us down to Rutland’s two yard line and kickstarted our comeback efforts. On offence the Highlanders were once again led by #12 QB Ben Corbett. Corbett threw two touchdowns to #88 Ethan Johnston and added two more rushing touchdowns of his own. On defence #54 Ryerson Wallace led the charge. Wallace seemed to be involved in almost every tackle. First year player linebacker #10 Keelan Hondro stepped a starting role and had an impact on almost every play. His heart and fearless pursuit of defence was impressive. The Highlander defensive line bought into the game plan and took care of business by filling their gaps allowing our linebackers to flow with speed all over the field. Unfortunately we entered the game with a line ravaged by injuries and this game didn’t help. The team will definitely need the next two bye weeks to get healthy. The West Vancouver Highlander Varsity Football team showed an exceptional amount of grit, heart and mental toughness to come together and fight for a huge road game. It was a good game and the score doesn't do the West vancouver JV Highlanders justice as they played great against a very very good Belmont Bulldog football team
Coach Currie said the JV Highlanders came ready to play in this one. Swapping scores on each of their opening drives. Belmont ended up going up 21-6 late in the first half. The JV Highlanders answered back before the end of the first half with their second touchdown of the day and a 2 point conversion to end the 1st half only down 21-14. The JV Highlanders put Belmont under pressure in the 2nd half forcing a fumble which for some reason got overturned to "intentional grounding" and Belmont regained their composure to score two plays later. West Van had an impressive drive late in the game to march from one end of the field to another, but unfortunately ended up fumbling and turning the ball over at the Belmont 5 yard line. The final score was 35-14, but this game easily could and should have been 28-21 or even 21-21 had the JV Highlanders had a few events go in their favour or a little luck. Coach Currie is proud of the team and states it was their best game as a unit they have played all year. The team has lots to build on from this game. Our Varsity Football team takes to the road for an important game this Friday, October 13th at against the Rutland Secondary School Voodoo in Kelowna, BC
4:00pm – Game Time at the Apple Bowl (Kelowna) The Varsity team had a really tough loss against the Nanaimo District Islanders and look to bounce back this week against a Rutland Voodoo team on their home turf. This will be a long day for the team as they travel to Kelowna, but facing adversity builds character. “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." ~ Martin Luther King Jr. Pride ~ Respect ~ United |
